Termscapes Will Change the Landscape of Text Analysis

December 6, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Distant Reading: A Program to Map out the Contents of All Those Texts You Don’t Have Time to Read

Have you every wished you could get a glimpse into a large set of books, articles, or documents, quickly get an idea of what they’re all about, and zero in on the one you should read first? A program developed by OU scholar of Islamic studies Dr. David Vishanoff and the Exaptive software developers uploads a set of text files, runs a vocabulary analysis on them, creates a zoomable word cloud showing which words tend to occur together, plots your texts onto that discourse map, and lets you explore.

At tonight’s Data+Creativity Meetup, Dr. Vishanoff and Exaptive machine learning lead Josh Southerland will describe the collaborative process that went into developing the software, give a demo of how it works, and talk about the implications this tool has for the future of academic text analysis.
